Gli Skunk Anansie hanno pubblicato il loro nuovo singolo “An Artist Is An Artist”: un brano new wave provocatorio e potente. La voce inconfondibile di Deborah Dyer ovvero Skin, con Cass Lewis al basso, Ace alla chitarra e Mark Richardson alla batteria torna a farsi sentire. La band, icona del rock britannico, ritorna dopo nove anni dall’uscita dell’album “Anarchytecture“ e tre anni dagli ultimi inediti: “What You Do For Love” (2019), “This Means War” (2020), “Piggy” e “Can’t Take You Anywhere” (2022). Il brano affronta i temi dell’ageismo e del continuo bisogno di approvazione nell’era digitale, richiamando per certi aspetti il violento singolo di debutto “Little Baby Swastikkka”. Chitarre angolari, riff tirati e un testo punk sono solo un assaggio di quello che i simboli della stirpe agit-pop hanno in serbo per questo 2025.
“An Artist Is An Artist” degli Skunk Anansie è prodotto da David Sitek dei Tv On The Radio, noto per i suoi lavori di produzione con Foals, Yeah Yeah Yeahs, Solange e Weezer. <<Il suo nome compariva su molti dischi che ci piacevano, ma nessuno suonava allo stesso modo. I progetti suonavano tutti freschi, ma soprattutto gli artisti suonavano tutti come se stessi>>, ha detto Skin a proposito del produttore. <<Ci ha ricordato che il processo di creazione della musica non deve essere per forza così complicato. Quando si fonda una band non lo è mai>>, ha aggiunto il chitarrista Ace. <<Riducendo tutto al minimo, abbiamo ritrovato il nostro spirito>> ha concluso la frontwoman della band. Dopo un periodo di introspezione, il lavoro con Sitek ha aiutato la formazione londinese a trasformarsi, uscendo dalla propria comfort zone. Il lyric video di “An Artist is An Artist” mostra gli Skunk Anansie vitali e freschi, in una forma musicale essenziale e dinamica.
Il brano, sviluppato su un tipico riff della band, incorpora anche un assolo di sax, strumento che Skin inizialmente detestava, ma che è diventato uno degli elementi più caratteristici della traccia. <<Io odio il sax, ma poi è arrivato questo tizio fottutamente figo che ha suonato il sax come non l’avevo mai sentito prima e a quel punto il mio mantra è diventato: fidati di Dave>>.
